Chapter 6

“Best two minutes of my year so far,” Joel teased as he brushed her hair from her face.

She set her hand on top of his and squeezed. “I bet we can improve on that.”

“I know we can. As soon as I catch my breath. I’m getting old. I might need two minutes to recover this year instead of one.” He eased out of her, rolled off the side of the bed, and padded to the bathroom. Seconds later he was back, once again spooning her from behind.

“Imagine how long you might need to recover if we had sex more than once a year?” she stated to open up the discussion she intended to have tonight.

Never mind that he so obviously had things to say to her before she broached the subject of expanding the scope of their relationship. All she could do was pray that somehow, whatever his reasons were for keeping secrets from her, she would still feel as strongly about him as she did right now.

Please, God. Don’t ruin this thing. It’s the best thing I’ve ever had. Don’t shit on it with details. I deserve this.

He hummed his nonresponse. “Mmm.” And then he lifted his leg over both of hers and drew her closer, as if that were possible. His next words shocked her. “You have no idea how badly I’d like to test that theory.”

She stopped breathing and jerked her head around to see his face. “Really?”

“Yes. Really.”

She wiggled against him, maneuvering herself so that she faced him. She knew her eyes were wide.

He cupped the side of her face. “Honest truth?”

“Please.” Her heart pounded.

“We’ve been on a total of six dates, and I’ve been in love with you from the first one.” His expression was serious. His hand held her cheek steady.

The deep breath she’d been holding rushed out. “Thank God.”

He gave her a slow smile and set his forehead against hers. “Do you have any idea how badly I’ve wanted to say that for several years?”

“I have too,” she breathed. They stared at each other for long seconds, so much emotion between them, and then she broke the silence. “Why, then? Why didn’t you say something?”

“Why didn’t you?” He lifted a brow, but he was also grinning.

“Because you were adamant. I mean, the first year I agreed. We had a one-night stand. It was awesome. I doubted I would ever see you again. But then you always made it clear that we could never have more, and honestly, I was afraid if I brought it up, I would risk even having this one night each year.”

He shook his head. “How many more years would you have gone without forcing the issue, Paris?” He stroked her cheek with his thumb.

“None. I promised myself to throw my cards in tonight. All or nothing.”

“Are you angry that I cheated and looked you up and kept up with you on social media?”

“Yes, but it’s better than finding out you didn’t care at all and this was just a yearly fuck for you.
